ABSTRACT

The year 2014 marked the fiftieth anniversary of organized migration from Turkey and Morocco to Belgium. In Flanders, this was commemorated and celebrated with a series of migration-related projects and activities. Contemporary scholarly discourse understands the transnational phenomena of migration and diaspora in an undogmatic way, as being dynamic and context-bound concepts. Diasporic subjects, groups, and cultures are marked by intrinsic heterogeneity, hybridity, and multiplicity. Gypsy brass band Orkestar Braka Kadrievi, known from the soundtrack of Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies, consists of members of the Macedonian Kadrievi family. The field of transcultural music can be analyzed by plotting musical expressions in a multi-dimensional field consisting of different axes or continua. Reinforcing structural support by the receiving society, accompanied by more visibility in the programming of the regular and specialized circuit, could possibly entail an increased detachment and independence from the motherland, which in turn could strengthen and uplift the transcultural musical production in Flanders.
