ABSTRACT

This chapter formulates a statement of purpose intended to guide those who want to make a leadership contribution to leadership studies. It considers the values and norms that have most salience to leadership in this context, as well as the domains of leadership in leadership studies, before turning to consider the attributes, behaviours, roles, rights and responsibilities that leaders and followers in leadership studies might benefit from and the kind of relationship that is implied as a consequence. The focus and purpose of the leader-follower relationship here turns on contributing to the overall purpose of leadership in leadership studies (LiLS), namely enabling the advancement of leadership knowledge that goes beyond instrumental concerns to provide genuine insight and benefit to all, by adhering to the best of the collegial and scholarly traditions, values and norms of academia. The chapter demonstrates that there is no requirement to identify follower roles, responsibilities and related rights as part of approach to LiLS.
