ABSTRACT

The author asked several teachers, Teaching Assistants and parents what they would expect from an article about ethnic diversity. They said author should start by explaining what diversity and ethnicity are, why people needed to know this and how they would benefit from having the information. In schools across the country, the ethnic diversity of the classroom will vary widely depending on where one is in the country and in which city they live. This chapter explores the varied characteristics that make up the diversity of minority ethnic children and young people likely to be in school classrooms. The classroom must be an inclusive environment, where difference does not displace or undermine each individual's sense of self. The ethnic diversity of local areas and nationally is always changing and is captured every ten years by the National Census.
