ABSTRACT
I am indebted to the authors of many phonetics handbooks as
well as to Zwicky (1968, 1970) for most of the data upon which
this chapter is based. This chapter is a compilation of the ob
servations these authors made about English; an attempt has been
made to improve upon these observations, by making them more pre
cise. Rules have been formulated, and their environments spe
cified.
