ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools. It discusses the role of the school leader in appreciating and managing diversity in schools. The chapter proposes actions for the twenty-first century school leader toward effectively managing diversity. It also discusses the tremendous cost of cultural incompetence toward the mounting education debt to disenfranchised students. The chapter explains the intersection and overlap in the missions of social justice leaders and leaders who champion viable diverse learning environments. It exposes the reality of the misnomer known as desegregated schools, and reintroduces the ideal of truly integrated schools. While decision making is value laden school leaders have a variety of motivations for their actions and the decisions they make. The chapter also discusses the prevalence of diversity in schools and the need to build up structures that advance educational attainment of diverse student subgroups.
