ABSTRACT

The introduction of economic reforms in India since 1991 has produced major structural changes in the Indian economy. India's labour market and employment prospects have been significantly influenced by the structural changes that have taken place in the country's economy over the last twenty-five years. A progressive reduction in the share of agriculture in national output and a marginal improvement in the share of manufacturing reflects the inability of both sectors to create and sustain new jobs. In emerging market economies like India, it is becoming increasingly evident that automation's adverse impact is not limited to low-skill manual blue collar jobs, but is gradually extending to jobs requiring more skills. "Make in India" includes some major service industries- aviation, IT and BPO, media and entertainment, tourism and hospitality, railways, ports and shipping, roads and highways and wellness.
