ABSTRACT

The management of resources in such a way that economic and sociocultural concerns are fulfilled is an important aspect of the managing of sustainable tourism in the new millennium. On the cultural side of sustainable tourism, the country of New Zealand is proactively highlighting its Maori culture while preserving and promoting Maori traditions and the environment. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) also advocated the need for partnerships in the management of sustainable tourism: 'Tourism being an extremely competitive industry requires a coordinated management approach based on collective vision and strong partnerships'. The tourism industry has identified climate change as a key issue that must be addressed in policy circles, strategic plans, and management practices. In 2007 East Carolina University developed a Center for Sustainable Tourism, and in 2010 a Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Tourism. Most researchers today use the definition of ecotourism presented by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES).
