ABSTRACT

This chapter enables the reader to describe his/her voice in intimate and appreciative detail, and recognize the ingredients that make up a voice and be able to identify them in oneself and in others. It further enables the reader to own his/her voice without judging it, and apply several basic methods for warming up his/her voice. The chapter presents five major reasons why an individual can have a voice all his/her life and still not know it: the voice is elusive; our society is voice ignorant; our own voices turn us off; voices do magic; and voice is contagious. We should stop letting our voice be a stranger. We need to begin by taking the time to recognize our own vocal past. Feedback has shaped our self-concept, whether that feedback was accurate or not.
