ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to deepen understanding of the impact of significant disadvantage and risk factors on families with young children and how this might affect their capacity and or willingness to participate in universal education and care services. The chapter includes descriptions of practical strategies to support educators responding ethically to families and children living with complex and often intergenerational disadvantage and risk factors. At the heart of this chapter lies a belief that reimagining partnerships with families recognises that they are the most important people in their children’s lives. Through engaging with and empowering families and children, educators acknowledge them as active holders of rights.
