ABSTRACT

The history of cities has been firmly entwined since the mid-twentieth century and in its own right London has left an indelible mark on both the shape of the advertising industry and its prevailing culture. The UK's most famous advertising luminary, Sir Martin Sorrell, is not only the CEO of the largest organisation by far in the history of the advertising industry, but is also a direct link back to the heady days of the 1960s-1980s when the British advertising made its global reputation through agencies such as CDP, Saatchi & Saatchi and BBH. This has a significant effect on the UK advertising industry, which continues to see international talent and international communications work as a central part of the UK media scene. The question that hangs in the air in the UK advertising industry is whether it can retain this strong role in the UK advertising business.
