ABSTRACT
Rollin summarizes the rationale for asserting the scientific incoherence of denying pain in animals, the observability of mental states in animals, the commonsense nature of mentation in animals, and the application of morality to animals in light of these understandings. He then points out how the human benefits derived from animals facilitated the rejection of ascribing moral worth to their treatment.
