ABSTRACT

Jamieson reviews a number of the arguments for and against zoos. He points out that while there are a number of arguments made in favor of zoos such as preservation, research, amusement, and education, these often are not compatible interests and thus only some benefits can occur in any one zoo. Further, he addresses the moral problems of keeping wild animals in captivity, the detrimental impacts of captivity, and the implicit message of a false sense of the human place in the natural order.
