ABSTRACT
Wemmer assesses the responsibilities and directions of zoos and aquariums following identification of the global diversity crisis. He contrasts the conflicting pressures between providing recreational opportunities for the public, providing education to the visiting public, and providing a greater service to society through science and conservation activities. He advocates greater emphasis on using zoos to support science and conservation efforts.
