ABSTRACT

As a British-born woman of Nigerian heritage Bola Agbaje brings a different voice to the black British theatre landscape. Plays such as Gone Too Far! Detaining Justice, and Belong reflect the impact the growing black population of African origin is having on the British theatrical landscape. Agbaje's plays chart the cultural negotiations occurring as a result of meetings between African and Caribbean diasporas in Britain. In gone too far! Agbaje demonstrates a malleable identity and ability to code-switch as an important survival strategy employed by minorities to gain social acceptance. Detaining justice raises questions regarding the reception of immigrants and asylum seekers in multicultural Britain. Detaining Justice portrays immigrants occupying low-paying and marginal positions in society. In off the endz Agbaje represents a more generalised urban working-class black British experience. Agbaje explores the theme of return migration, principally through the protagonist who returns to Nigeria for a visit and then decides to stay and pursue his political career there.
