ABSTRACT
This chapter intends as both a philosophical and a practical guide to the business of doing academic research and its contents reflect mostly the hard-earned experience of one who has been doing all of these things for a very long time. An academic research career with all the creativity and freedom of expression that it involves can be a truly fulfilling way to spend the life. Academic staff are constantly assessed on their teaching performance, their research grant income and their publications. The chapter provides some genuine practical help in how to go about the business. All the research one performed should be published openly for all the world to read. While research work ought to be a fun, it comes with a lot of pressure to succeed in quantifiable ways. The career of an academic researcher is the personal expression, intellectual freedom and complete ownership of the intellectual property.
