ABSTRACT

Thus far we've discussed New Communities, small Midwestern cities that have newly arrived Mexican-American communities, and Established Communities, with well-established Mexican-American communities but few new arrivals of any demographic or ethnic group. A third landscape type falls between these two opposites: the Mixed Community, with both a lengthy history of Mexican-American residents and a substantial presence of new arrivals. These Mixed Communities are distinct in other ways, both spatially and non-spatially, from Established and New Communities. This chapter describes these Mixed Communities, with an in-depth profile of Holland, Michigan. A final hypothetical project case study follows, this one depicting a park redesign in a Mixed Community.
