ABSTRACT

From the age of three years, children become more sociable and interested in other people. Three year olds may make overtures towards other people, even strangers, because they enjoy social interactions and would rather initiate them than play alone or be ignored. They may communicate with new people through smiles and other expressions, gestures and actions before using speech. Language development and thinking skills can be especially encouraged and promoted in children between three years and three and a half years through the sharing of stories, songs and rhymes and engaging in discussions and imaginative flights of fantasy. Children with visual impairments feel most confident when they hear clear instructions about where they are and what they are likely to encounter. Depending on the degree of visual impairment, large picture books, friezes and posters or black and white patterns and symbolic pictures may have some value and help with the acquisition of vocabulary.
