ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an evidence-based foundation for the development of resilience through coaching and outlines what coaches can do to develop resilience in their athletes and teams. It reviews the literature regarding psychological resilience in sport, team resilience in sport, and resilience training through coaching. A growing body of evidence points to resilience as an important psychological phenomenon for attaining high levels of sport performance. Team resilience was explained as a 'dynamic, psychosocial process which protects a group of individuals from the potential negative effect of the stressors collectively encountered. In the sport psychology literature, Morgan's study extended resilience research by providing greater definitional clarity of resilience at the team level and proposing a framework to profile the resilient characteristics of elite sport teams. Fletcher and Sarkar's grounded theory provides coaches with a model to understand the impact of psychological resilience on the stress process in sport, and its relationship with optimal sport performance.
