ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the author's experiences during his second year of teaching, when the realization slowly dawned that perhaps college had not provided him with enough foundation to help his students learn all they could learn. As he worked in his classroom to finish putting things away for the summer, he looked at the remnants of the school year. He no longer recognized himself as a teacher or a person. It was that all-too-typical classroom where any group work is forced, and homework is turned in "on the dot" or points are deducted. When teachers talk a lot, students turn into drones. Instead of creating opportunities for them to explore the content and discover their own passionate interests, teachers talk and talk and talk so that they can cover all of the curriculum and get them ready for the Assessment. His advice is to smile, love, laugh, share, think, reflect, and question. Be kind, brave and you.
