ABSTRACT

A.P. Møller-Maersk is a diversified worldwide company that has 18 business units and does business in shipping and transportation for diverse markets (e.g., oil, supermarkets, and supply chain management). The company came under tremendous economic pressure in 2009. For the first time in its history, it reported a decrease in revenues and profits. Also, 2009 marked the first time the company filed its Sustainability Report, and it received a C+ on the GRI (a worldwide standard for environmental reporting). CEO Nils S. Andersen stated in the 2009 report, “We believe that sustainable development is essential for society and business to thrive and grow. We are committed to integrating sustainability into all of our business operations and making our performance transparent to our stakeholders.” 1 Despite the CEO’s intentions, the grade indicated that the company’s performance was not meeting its own standard.
