ABSTRACT

Maersk Lines, a unit of A.P. Møller-Maersk, is a shipping company serving customers and transporting containers all over the world. Its fleet consists of over 500 ships with 300 offices in over 125 countries. Its focus in 2009 was on reducing costs and “adjusting the company to new market realities.” 2 Even with this focus, Maersk continued its efforts to save energy and improve its environmental performance through modifying its operations. Between 2002 and 2008, their efforts resulted in a 15 percent increase in energy efficiency per container shipped. Ninety-nine percent of energy usage and emissions came from ships (their own and time-chartered ships).
