ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with practical aspects of chartering calculations concerning different charter forms and vessel types. Instead, the following cases are given just for educational purposes to enlighten the rationale of tanker market freight calculations and Worldscale methodology. In other words, a voyage estimation calculates the cost for the carriage of a specific cargo from one port to another and examines whether the rate of freight will cover the shipowner's expenses and a reasonable profit will be earned. The use of standard "estimate forms" helps the shipowner in producing consistent estimates of chartering alternatives. The voyage plan is specified via loading and discharging ports up to the position where the ship is expected to start her next employment. The voyage expenses are defined as the variable costs incurred for the execution of a voyage and include the bunkers cost, port charges, canal dues and other transit costs, cargo-handling expenses, extra insurance premiums.
