ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how hope is related to education and imagination. The teachers had real and positive hope for their students by engaging them in real life activities and demonstrating their strengths by developing art galleries of their work, public theatrical and musical performances and community involvement. The teachers imagined a future for their students with disabilities as productive and engaged members of their community and prepared them with skills and experiences that would encourage this. The letter also reflects that schools can influence the futures for people with disabilities and that their programs can be inclusive and community based. Rather than be hidden from the public's eyes, Fitz's teachers challenged this and broke down the barriers between school and community. Community was invited into the lives of the young people with disabilities and they were in turn invited into the community.
