ABSTRACT

This chapter delineates how humour can impact the tasks and colleagues of a work team. It starts with examining the potential and risk of using humour in face-to-face workplace talk, then revealing the inter-textual and multimodal performance of humour in online interaction among colleagues. The study not only shows the roles of keyboard, mouse, software affordances, and the relevant cyber-behaviour in coworkers’ humour on the Internet, but also discusses the resulting heteroglossic identity and amplification of power due to the distinctive nature of computer-mediated communication. It will afford new insights into the features of workplace humour in the Digital Age.
