ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief overview of some of the corpus methods that can be employed when analysing workplace encounters, such as frequency lists, keywords, and discourse prosody, and demonstrates how corpus linguistics can add value to research into workplace discourse. Throughout the chapter, the importance of considering context when doing corpus linguistics is emphasized, as the importance of seeing corpus linguistics methods as more than number-crunching tools is demonstrated. The reflexive relationship between text and context is critical for understanding what people mean when they talk at work, and corpus methods can facilitate such analysis.
