ABSTRACT

In view of educational developments, this chapter presents an overview of trends in educational reforms and practices that are common within Asia beyond national borders, while at the same time describing the diversity in education in Asia, as well as the uniformity and homogeneity in educational policies and measures that are found within such Asian diversity. It examines issues relating to the public and global nature of education with a particular focus on two matters: first, citizenship education, which is aimed at nurturing future citizens who will lead society, in order to contemplate the public role of education, and, second, English-language education, as a phenomenon that symbolizes the globalization of education. The chapter presents how citizenship education and English language education are promoted in neighboring Asian countries to consider the public and global nature of education from as neutral and objective a standpoint as possible.
