ABSTRACT

The year 2011, people experienced an almost uninterrupted stream of disasters: an earthquake in New Zealand, earthquakes, tsunami, and a nuclear crisis in Japan, tornadoes in the USA, flooding in Thailand, flooding in Pakistan, and an earthquake in Turkey, to name a few. Among them, the 3/11 earthquake and a nuclear crisis caused a major catastrophe in Tohoku, Japan. An earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and a subsequent tsunami struck eastern Japan on March 11, 2011. It was the most powerful earthquake in Japanese modern history, causing some 19,000 deaths and missing persons. In the Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures, the damages were tremendous. Despite concerns over radiation exposure, many Muslim volunteers such as Bangladeshis, Indians, Indonesians, Iranians, Pakistanis, and Turks residing in Japan, rushed to the affected areas, sometimes working in collaboration with Muslim NGOs. The Muslim NGOs and their activities are not only areas of study, but arenas that enable us to help each other.
