ABSTRACT

The leadership development strategies and resources in this chapter are taken directly from practice. Dr. Tricia Browne-Ferrigno, Professor of Educational Leadership Studies at the University of Kentucky, shares insights into different tools and processes to help prepare aspiring school leaders for field-based instructional observations. Current school leaders in a district Leadership Development System can also use these tools as part of an ongoing leadership development and support system. Principal Coaches utilize a Leadership Coaching Tool that was adapted from the New Teacher Center Collaborative Assessment Log. The tool also includes a section to progress monitor work toward the McREL Balanced Leadership Framework. Our framework includes Managing Change, Focus of Leadership, and Purposeful Community. This leadership development tool was provided by Dr. Al Bertani. Dr. Bertani is a Senior Advisor with the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago in the United States and Senior Associate with the Innovation Unit in England.
