ABSTRACT

China is progressively looking for clean energy sources so as to reduce its heavy reliance on coal. China has started to increase the importation of natural gas via the pipeline connection with neighbouring countries and to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. The elements that hinder the development of national resources are playing against energy security concerns, leading to China being forced to increase its dependence on foreign sources. Gas is a relatively abundant resource in China. The first discovery of gas reserves on the Chinese territory was in 1998, when Chinese authorities surveyed a total of 662 oil and gas fields. Concerning offshore resources, 142 gas fields were detected and distributed in the Bohai Gulf, the Pearl River delta. China is investing on a large scale in the development of new technologies, all the while promoting partnerships with foreign companies in order to explore and exploit both national and international gas resources.
