ABSTRACT

In the religion of ancient Rome, responsibility and power over gates and doorways was given to the god Janus. Like Christianity and the ‘mystery’ of its trinity, Janus is made up of two figures, a ‘binity’, if you will, comprising ‘Janus Patulcius’ and ‘Janus Clusivus’. Janus Patulcius has authority over open gates or doorways, while Janus Clusivus takes over when gates or doorways are closed.
