Post-16 education and issues of inclusion
This chapter considers inclusion in further education (FE), sixth form and apprenticeships in the UK. The focus will not be limited to those students with special educational needs, but will consider issues around all further education and sixth form students who may be at risk of exclusion or marginalisation. These would include young people such as those currently not in education, employment or training (NEETs) or those who are lower achieving academically. The chapter will explore the topic from the perspective of sixth form teachers and college lecturers examining the challenges they face in trying to implement inclusive strategies in classrooms and work settings. This will include recruitment, planning learning activities and assessment activities for inclusion of marginalised groups. The chapter will reflect on other key issues, such as the tension between promoting inclusive practice and the challenges for schools and colleges.
