ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book overviews basic tools and practical steps involved in an art therapy research study and areas of inquiry that hold particular interest for art therapists. It includes multicultural and cross-cultural considerations of using art in research design, assessment, representation, and knowledge claims in recognition of the globalization of art therapy. The book then describes major research paradigms through "lens" of an art therapist that illustrates their inherent congruence with art therapy practice. It also explains the hierarchy of evidence on which outcomes research is evaluated, details how to conduct an outcome study, and has new sections on mixed methods, systematic reviews, and consensus research. The book also guides the reader with "how-to" of writing an effective research proposal, conducting research within ethical standards, reading and evaluating research, and reporting and publishing one's work.
