ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses medical and hygienic activities of the university town of Cambridge and the administrative county. Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge forms the official centre for the treatment of venereal diseases for the town and the county. The County Council provides supervision, except in residential institutions. This supervision is given in patients' homes, at a tuberculosis dispensary, and in sanatoria and hospitals. The control of midwives devolves on the County Council as the local supervising authority for the administrative county, but in order to help the borough's scheme for maternity and child welfare work, the detailed administration of the Midwives Act has been delegated to the Town Council. There are seven maternity and child welfare centres in the county outside the borough of Cambridge. The services of the district nurses who assist the voluntary workers at each centre are given in return for the general grants made for child welfare work to the nursing associations.
