ABSTRACT

To the north of Papua, in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, the situation was almost as chaotic and in some respects even more serious. The European population was much larger than in Papua, largely because of the gold-fields, and although none of the principal settlements — Madang, Lae, Salamaua, Bulolo and Wau — was bigger than a small Australian country town, they all presented major problems for evacuation.
