ABSTRACT
The urgency of defending Port Moresby was clear enough as soon as the strength of the Japanese was recognised and soon after the American defeat at Pearl Harbour, the Australian Cabinet moved to reinforce the garrison in the town. If the events that followed this decision were shameful, it was all the more astonishing that the men who were involved fought on to become a very brave fighting force. But that was still in the future.
