ABSTRACT
On 8 March 1942 the Japanese occupied Lae and Salamaua which were at opposite sides of the bay formed by the mouth of the Markham River and about an hour apart by motor boat. There was no road linking the two and Salamaua, which was built on a narrow strip of land at the foot of the hills, was little more than a handful of buildings and an aerodrome.
