ABSTRACT
The Anglican mission at Gona on the north coast of Papua was an oasis between the dark water of the Solomon Sea and the jungle which spread back inland as far as the eye could see. The mission had been founded in 1900 on the site of a particularly brutal massacre of European gold prospectors by local tribesmen. When the government sent in forces to rescue them, the tribesmen murdered them too.
