ABSTRACT

Eleven-year-old Jackson thought he knew what the problem was: ‘You don’t understand because you are white’, he told me. His friend Marty, however, had a different explanation: ‘No. White has nothing to do with it’ he replied, ‘[The problem is that] she doesn’t understand our language’. For a brief moment I was forgotten, the two boys pondering over this insight. ‘True’ agreed Jackson, thus settling the issue: the problem was that I did not understand their language.
