ABSTRACT

Teachers work with a diverse population of students, which means that they also work with a diverse population of parents. Teachers who work with students who are trying to learn a second language may meet even more diversity issues, specifically the biases of certain parents. In the following case, a dual-language pre-kindergarten classroom sets the stage for an irate parent to demand the unthinkable. Unfortunately, some parents have expectations that are not realistic or are discriminatory to other students and educators. In the following, one such parent is illustrated. Mrs. Duran has been a pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) teacher for more than half her teaching career, and she still loves her job after thirty-three years in the classroom. She is an exceptional Pre-K teacher, one who is respected and adored by her colleagues at Mitchell Elementary. ESL is a program that helps English-language learners (ELLs) to become proficient in the English language.
