ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why the concept of creativity is important to applied learning; describes some creative approaches to teaching; suggests some topics for professional reflection. The technological innovations required creativity from their inventors, but it is important to remember that they increasingly require creativity from their users to make the most of the innovations' application to benefit the user's life. Embedding creativity and creative thinking into the learning experience of young people may seem daunting to already busy teachers, but in terms of successful learner engagement and motivation it is, in most cases, more than worth the effort. Creative expression and creative thinking are often confused in educational terms and therefore some clarification will help to distinguish between them in planning creativity into applied learning experiences. Scaffolding learning can provide a valuable tool for enabling learners to develop creativity and creative thinking.
