ABSTRACT

Applied learning involves a complex mix of skills, connections and knowledge that have to be understood by the teacher in order to be facilitated effectively in their teaching. In order for teachers to embrace Relevant, Engaging, Active Learning (REAL) opportunities, they need time to plan, a mindset and approach that champions learner independence and personal need, and an acceptance that authentic experiences develop learners. Applied learning can utilize a variety of teaching and learning strategies, from problem-based learning to authentic creative challenges. Applied learning is at its best when learners can see the connection with working life, so teachers should seek to develop and maintain good links with employers and have an up-to-date understanding of the relevant skills sectors and employment opportunities linked to the subjects they teach. Once a teacher has experienced effective applied learning, they realize that learners' engagement, motivation and development have made all the effort, reflection and evaluation worthwhile.
