ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces three concepts that are linked to the forethought phase of the cyclical feedback loop: task analysis, goal-setting, and planning. These three processes are important to Self-Regulated Learning development because they "set the stage" for learning. The chapter provides the meaning and importance of these processes and discusses how teacher can integrate them into classroom activities and discourse using case scenarios and illustrations. It presents a three-step process that teachers can follow to promote students' task analysis skills: enhancing understanding, enhancing perceived value, and providing structured practice opportunities. Task analysis is fundamental to reading, mathematics, writing, and many other types of learning situations. After students begin to understand the meaning of task analysis and its value to learning, they will benefit greatly from structured opportunities to practice their task analysis skills. Enhancing student motivation involves nurturing their motivation beliefs and perceptions as well as the goals they set for themselves.
