ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how students can play a role in the feedback generation process via self-monitoring tactics. It defines the core components and benefits of self-monitoring. The chapter provides examples and case scenarios to illustrate how teachers can infuse monitoring activities as a routine part of classroom activities and assignments. It focuses on that students can supplement teacher feedback by monitoring their own thoughts and actions as they complete classwork and homework. The chapter offers a few recommendations that teachers can use to enhance the frequency and quality of student self-monitoring during classrooms activities and/or assignments. It suggests that asking students to only monitor things they are capable of monitoring. Self-monitoring also cultivates perceptions of human agency and autonomy. It is when students come to realize that they do not need to depend on others that they can finally take that leap to greater responsibility and ownership of their educational success.
