ABSTRACT

In the pages that follow we have presented a series of “moments” in the history of India. Our goal has been to present the material on the Mughal empire and its successors in transparent enough a fashion that readers can relate these episodes to what they know from other work. Generally speaking, the Mughal empire has been presented as unconnected to the ordinary people. We shall not be presenting a deduction of power, which starts at the center and aims to discover the extent to which it extends to the most molecular elements of society. In our work we are presenting, rather, an ascending analysis of power, from the most molecular elements of society to see how they have been colonized, used, transformed or displaced by more general mechanisms and forms of global domination.1
