ABSTRACT

Universities face an ongoing challenge in building and maintaining institutional capacity to deliver on their mission and priorities, relying heavily on high-performing academics for many of these outcomes. Those who move into formal roles as part of their career progression also face considerable learning as they transition to a new identity and set of responsibilities. Development programs are a valuable mechanism to support these foci. They encourage alignment with the university’s targets and priorities, building cadres of capable leaders and academics to help move the university’s priorities forward. The investment in a program can reap many returns on that initial funding and is a strong motivational outcome for those who participate.
