ABSTRACT

Research is a key differentiator between higher education institutions and other educational providers. A high-cost enterprise, it requires institutional investment to support research activities. Each country has developed different approaches to sponsoring and recognising research. However, there are clear similarities. Research drives university reputation and the public nature of research outcomes, quality and productivity metrics makes research everyone’s business. While the nature, depth and breadth of the research activities will be highly divergent across different universities, each academic plays a part in building their institution’s research identity.
