ABSTRACT
This account begins with the military occupation and early laying out of Sydney before charting the ways in which a nineteen19th- century “‘civilising”’ project and then reserve system was transformed into a twentie20th- century segregationist regime. Finally, the focus will shift to Sydnthey afposter -World War II Sydney, when Aboriginal people (re)occupied particular parts of the city – including the reserve at La Perouse – and were deliberately scattered into outer suburban public housing areas.
