ABSTRACT
Chapter 6 draws on some of the perspectives from Chapter 2, plus others (notably Zizek, Ritzer, Bauman, Castells and Tyler), to offer a characterisation of the fractured society that financial capitalism has spawned. The analysis that follows is framed by social disintegration, class as an absent presence, McDonaldisation as end-stage control, surplus cultural liquidity, flows and superhubs and the weaponising of stigma. The conclusion to this chapter pulls together multiple and diverse threads to articulate what I take to be a genuinely sociological theory of health inequalities.
