ABSTRACT

This study conducts an examination of path dependence and interdependence in institutions in Nigeria. The analysis focuses on two main categories of institutions: civil and political liberties, and immovable property rights. We employ a new index of institutions for the period 1861 through to 2011, constructed using pre-existing (de jure) legislations for Nigeria. We make use of unit root tests to check for the existence of memory in the indices, and we use an error correction model to examine the nature of interdependence between the institutions’ categories. The results show support for persistence and an interesting outcome for interdependence of institutions.
