ABSTRACT
Imagine you are an American citizen with strong preferences for the Democratic Party. You are actively involved in grassroots political mobilization to elect leaders you believe will adopt policies to benefit your local community. You receive word that Chinese academics with funding from China’s equivalent of the National Science Foundation (i.e., Chinese government money) plan to run an experiment in your electoral district to “identify the determinants of support for Republican candidates.” Their previous research suggests that certain interventions will increase support for Republican candidates. They plan to test these same interventions in your district, raising the possibility that the experiment might affect voting outcomes. Is such an experiment ethical? Why or why not?
